Yoga has become a very common term in the Western world today and yoga classes can be found in virtually every town. The word 'yoga' comes from ancient Sanskrit and means to unite, coordinate or energize. Yoga is not a religion but a philosophy of life based on psychological facts and aims to develop a perfect balance between the body and mind. Yoga has healing potential for the body and mind and addresses structural imbalances like bone and joint problems and hormonal and immune system disorders.
While there are many types of yoga, most people practice one of the three most popular.
Lyengar – is a more classical style of yoga, perfect for beginners and those who have not exercised for a while. Participants focus on paying attention to how the poses are performed and props such as chairs, straps, blocks and pillows or even sandbags are used to overcome a lack of flexibility. This type can be helpful for back or joint problems.
Ashtanga – or Power Yoga is for well conditioned athletes. Ashtanga focuses on developing strength and stamina and the poses are more difficult than those performed in other styles with the participants moving quickly from one pose to another.
Hatha – is probably what most Westerners think of as yoga. Hatha seeks to promote health and well-being through physical exercise. It is a more mellow, relaxed form of yoga that focuses on easier poses that flow from one to another at a comfortable pace. Participants go at their own pace, focusing on breathing and relaxing. Many use this type of yoga to wind down at the end of the day. The effects of this type of yoga on the circulation and organs can be profound. Participants can improve the functioning of the inner organs, glands and nerves for more radiant health and greater energy, better concentration and a happier, more fulfilling life.

Yoga is always debated about its merits as a cardiovascular workout exercise. Some yoga instructors argue that they can get class heart rates up higher than if you ran a marathon. Studies over time come to a general consensus that the yoga and fitness has a positive impact on muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. Cardiovascular exercise that involves the large muscle groups helps increase longevity by increasing the body demand for oxygen and making the heart and lungs work harder. Yoga postures definitely stretch the body and increase flexibility. The best idea would be to combine the aerobic exercises with yoga poses. Some doctors would argue that yoga falls into musculoskeletal and relaxation categories.
One important decision you will make as you begin yoga is choosing your yoga mat. The type of mat you use will depend on the type of yoga you practice, the level of cushioning you need for knees and spine and the length you need if you are tall. While it is true that yoga requires almost no tools, a comfortable mat is an essential part of making your practice successful.
A successful practice is one which:
Enables you to follow a range of yoga positions, meditation poses and relaxation poses
Makes your yoga session complete, comfortable and satisfying
Helps you realize the true physical and mental potential of each position
Mats should:
support any poses, whether physical (standing, sitting or reclining), meditation or relaxation without any feeling of discomfort
be large enough for varying range of postures and extensions with soft edges -at least a few inches longer than you are
have a sufficient grip to support achieving the optimum benefits of each yoga position
be soft enough to counter the hardness of the floor
be firm enough to provide the right balance to your postures
be sweat-absorbent
be machine washable
Questions the yoga practitioner might ask when choosing a mat:
Does the mat grip the floor without sliding?
Do the feet stay in position on the mat?
If the feet sweat, will they still grip the mat?
Is the mat made of a durable material?
Does the mat lay flat without curling?
Is the mat washable? How easy is it to clean?
Is the mat lightweight for carrying?
About sticky mats: A sticky mat is not yoga fly-paper – it is just a nice surface to provide traction for your feet and hands while insulating you from cold floors. You might be able to borrow a mat from your yoga studio, but eventually you will want to your own. Look for a mat that can be rolled for easy transportation, and that is at least a few inches longer than you are. Sticky mats come in either one-eighth-inch- or quarter-inch-thick sizes. Thicker mats offer more cushioning, but are slightly less stable when used in challenging poses. Mats can be layered for added cushioning.
Sticky mat maintenance: If you are sweating during your yoga routine, you may find that your mat is more slippery than sticky. Chalk can help make your mat less slippery, as can wiping it with a soft cloth or using a small amount of mild detergent. Give your mat time – it will lose the slipperiness on its own.
About bolsters, blankets and zafus: They are not just a soft place to sit or lie! These soft blocks provide soft support while sitting for long periods of time. They are also great any time more support is needed, as when sitting or lying in a resting pose. Blankets give similar support when folded, and provide warmth in the final resting pose.
